Think
of England
England has been the key subject of Mangnum
photographer Martin Parr since he started making pictures.
This book is his vision of contemporary England, composed
of work shot since 1999 along with projects on West Bay,
and British food and flowers. The photographs reveal the
ability of Parr to transform the obvious into the surprising,
reinventing cliches of Englishness as provocative revelations.
His tour takes in seaside resorts, herbaceous borders,
the bring and buy stall, cucumber sandwiches and cups
of tea, Ascot, the charity shop, blotchy skin, baked beans
and bad footwear. Simultaneous affectionate and direct,
all the photographs are shot with a ring flash camera
(normally used for medical photographs), his medium of
choice. by Martin Parr |

The
Most Beautiful Villages of England
Villages are the very embodiment
of Englishness. Honey coloured cottages from peaceful
Cornwall communities; splendid thatched roofs sweeping
over eaves and windows in the villages of Hampshire; half-timbering,
flint and limestone giving Suffolk hamlets their characteristic
appearance; and limestone, sandstone and millstone grit
giving a darker look to those of Yorkshire, Durham and
Northumberland. This volume records the richness and diversity
of the English village in photographs and commentary.
Grouped by area and sub-divided by county, this is a celebration
of the most beautiful villages of England.James Bentley

The
Nature of Scotland
This book is an illustrated study
of the interdependence of the landscape, the wildlife
and the people of Scotland. It begins with the violent
birth of Scotland, and retells tales of the early hunters
who followed the retreating ice and the first farmers
who cleared the land and began farming. The authors go
on to discuss the implicit conflicts in the use of land
today, and the state of the environment and the other
forces which have transformed the landscape and wildlife
today.- Magnus Magnusson, Graham White. |

Finely printed and a joy to browse. For all of us that

It is amazing how many photographs were and are taken
in and around water. Many previously unpublished photographs.
From an exhibition in Portugal. Highly recommended.by
