THE SHILDON RECALL SOCIETY is a small group
of people dedicated to the task of preserving Shildon's past,
through the collection and subsequent archiving of documents
and photographs relating to the town and it's inhabitants.
The Society meets in the Shildon Centre each
thursday evening from 7.30-9.00pm, and is an informal gathering
of those with an interest in local history, particularly relating
to Shildon and the surrounding areas. Anyone with a similar
interest is welcome, as are those researching ancestral links
with the town, those carrying out research for educational
purposes, and those who would like to learn a little about
Shildon's past.(Anyone conducting research etc., is not charged
for the use of the facilities, although a copy of any thesis
would be a welcome addition to the archives.).
The Society is always grateful for the loan
of photographs and documents, which can be copied in minutes,
thus ensuring that you have the originals returned almost
immediately.
Each year a display of photographs is shown
at the Shildon Gala, and members are available for slide shows
for clubs, nursing homes and societies, for which no charge
is made, although a donation towards travelling expenses would
be most welcome.
The Society maintains a permanent display
within the Museum, of clothing, everyday items and photographs
donated to the Society over the years.
During restoration of the Museum and it's
buildings, photographs were provided depicting the buildings
in their original state, facilitating the award of grants
towards it's renovation. Similar assistance has been given
to other projects within Shildon.
If you would like to know more about The
Recall Society and it's activities, why not visit
the Shildon Centre any thursday evening where you will be
most welcome.
